Wafia
Rough Trade, Brooklyn NY
Thursday, Feb 1st. 2018
A little discouraged by the empty storefront, I walked through the doors of Rough Trade to a quiet record store on the Williamsburg waterfront, Thursday night. But as I neared the far end of the room, the noise started to make its way through closed doors.
The opener, Jaira Burns, performed to a small but responsive crowd, but by about 10 PM the room had thickened out in anticipation of the night’s headliner, Wafia.
Performing her hits ‘Bodies’ and ‘Heartburn’ the Australian based newcomer confidently hit her notes and engaged the intimate crowd.
A few tracks in the 24-year-old stopped to introduce her next song ‘Only Love’ sharing with the audience that it was written about her (female) best friend whom she had fallen in love with.
Wafia’s been on the scene since 2015, but her latest EP ‘VIII’ was just released in November of last year.
Closing the show with an encore, returning to the stage to perform a version of American Boy, the artist changed up the lyrics to better suit herself
Wafia put on a strong show for an adoring audience. She is soft-spoken but a powerful singer. Her music and lyrics are a delight. Racking up more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify, I would say she was a solid find for her record label, Future Classic and definitely one to pay attention to.
